Data presents the most exciting opportunities and also some of our largest problems for IT management today.

We’re leading increasingly multimedia-rich lives. On top of this we’re collecting data at unprecedented levels, with estimates showing the doubling of data volumes globally every two years.

This requires more sophisticated and higher performance data-driven solutions.

If you consider the free movement of data within a Hybrid IT environment (be that on-premise, private or public cloud, or both!), you have to think about the impact that new regulation can have.

GDPR adds to the challenge

This new regulation means any information that may relate back to an individual citizen can now only be located and managed within Europe.

Think of the implications for all those investment banks, financial services institutions and retailers that have offshored their data in the last few years. This creates significant issues.

But one thing is for certain: these organisations would have designed their solutions differently had they access to a crystal ball.

Customers are increasingly looking at solutions that allow for the collation, management and indexation of data – some of which is extremely rich (such as video).

Combine this with businesses collecting more data about us than they ever have before. They are looking for insight to market, sell, personalise and improve the user experience for us.

This personalised data has to be treated very differently from other categories of data. You’ve got to be confident in your ability to move data around the planet in a cost-effective manner. That is the basis of NetApp’s Data Fabric.

What does good look like?

The organisations geared up to quickly deal with unanticipated events (be that market, customer, or regulatory) will be the winners in the digital age.

Data is critical to this in terms of both speed and efficiency. And it often means it has to be accessed from anywhere whilst also adhering to regulation.

Fujitsu helped one UK bank with a new private cloud solution to help manage its desktop estate. All the information is located centrally on server farms, but combined with a private cloud solution (using a Hybrid IT model) it can be accessed wherever it’s needed.

This creates a complex web of data in a highly regulated environment – but the correct management of that data (plus Hybrid IT) meant the customer got the solution they needed.

Another example (also in the financial services space) is Nanto Bank in Japan, who wanted to improve the quality of service around a wealth management application.

This is one of the strongest regulatory environments in the world, but by utilising our MetaArc plarform we were able to address these problems while also creating a mobile application that could be used on any device.

This could not have been done without the effective management of data.

How do businesses get there?

A good first port of call for any organisation is considering their data map: how does information flow around their business? Where is it stored? Does that straddle different geographies?

Data Fabric is a way of aligning, indexing and moving that data to meet those complex requirements – all across one single view.

As I said earlier in this article, the key thing to reflect is that if you have a data problem, it’s already too late.

The combination of regulation, a growing cyber security threat, and the need to digitise means having a clear view on your data, no matter where it is, will give you the platform for success in the digital era.
