Backup your Data with Tape

In spring, at the start of the running and outdoor sports season many sports stores offer muscle support tapes. Last year I experienced pain in my knees and joints after my first big hike, for the season. I was unable to practice sports for several weeks. My knees really hurt, especially when going downhill; so this year I ensured that I use an elastic tape as a precaution. The tape protects my knee and I can hike without pain.

But why should IT organizations use tape to protect their data?

Enterprises can be put out of action by cyber-attacks, such as ransomware, where critical data is encrypted until a ransom is paid in Bitcoin, in exchange for the unlock key. Organizations that are locked out of their data face a trail of damage that can take weeks or months to rectify.

For prevention, follow the ‘three two one’ backup rule: keep at least three copies of data, storing two backup copies on different storage media, and keeping one copy offline. Especially for business-critical data, an encrypted offline backup is a sure-fire way of keeping information safe from online attack.
